A 24-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell Tuesday morning, police say.
According to police, Esaias Johnson was being held on a fugitive arrest warrant and charged with menacing.
The Department of Corrections says he was in his cell when an officer found him unresponsive and called for medical staff and was pronounced dead some time after. A medical examiner is working to figure out how he died.
The Legal Aid Society responded to Johnson's death saying, "We were devastated to learn of the tragic death of our client Esaias Johnson, who was only 24 years old. He was a beloved son and brother. We mourn alongside his family, and we join their call for answers."
They are placing the blame on the city’s jail system saying problems within the system create for dangerous conditions for the inmates, especially those in need of medical and mental health care.
The Legal Aid Society also noted that this is the third inmate to die in the last month and call for city hall to reduce the number of inmates in jail.
