A Calverton family is recovering after their home was destroyed by fire early Friday morning — the second time the same house has gone up in flames in less than two years.
According to Riverhead police, five people were inside the Middle Road residence when the fire broke out around 3:40 a.m. All of them were able to escape, but two were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The house had just been rebuilt following a previous fire in September 2023.
Video from the scene shows flames fully engulfing the structure as about 50 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Despite their efforts, the home was destroyed.
“It’s gone,” said neighbor Nick Anthony. “They spent a lot of money fixing it. Believe me, I know — they spent a lot of money.”
As of Friday afternoon, the Riverhead Fire Marshal's Office was continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. No official determination has been made.
