Nearly three acres of greenery in the Bronx's Starlight Park will now be open to the public, as the New York City Parks Department unveiled the Starlight Greenspace, a $41 million initiative.
The greenspace is the second phase of an expansion that started over a decade ago to transform a formerly paved industrial property to a network of new walking paths, a dog run, and sitting areas to view the wildlife around.
Two new bridges have been built to connect the east and west sides of the river that run through Starlight Park, helping to connect neighborhoods that were previously separated.
Christian Murphy, an ecologist with the Bronx River Alliance, says that those bridges will help make a green lifestyle more accessible for more Bronx residents.
“It kind of undoes the fracturing that all of our rampant highway construction did in the early part of the last century,” said Murphy. "We're hoping that we're helping to make the community healthy overall."
