Multiple children are recovering after pepper spray was accidentally shot into a classroom of fourth-graders at P.S. 72 on Dewey Avenue.
Fourth-grader Perla Perez tells News 12 that one of her classmates had pepper spray in her bag and that it accidentally shot out.
She says as students were getting to ready to go home, the fellow fourth-grader mentioned her baby sister had put the pepper spray in her backpack. That's when it suddenly got smashed and the spray clouded up two classrooms.
The young witness says roughly 15 students began crying and panicking with red burning eyes and itching noses. They then relocated to the other side of the school, where ambulances soon arrived.
The student says the incident was an accident.
In a statement to News 12, the city's Department of Education says "the safety of students and staff is our top priority. The incident was immediately reported, the NYPD responded and individuals impacted by the substance were treated. We are looking into it and will ensure appropriate follow-up action is taken."
