Police have arrested 66-year-old Xiex Cruz in connection with a fentanyl spill that forced residents to evacuate a Belmont apartment building Tuesday night.

He is facing multiple charges, including three counts of criminal possession and three counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Belmont has been the site of other fentanyl-related incidents. In April, police seized thousands of pills from a nearby Gerard Avenue apartment, and in October, authorities discovered fentanyl and industrial pill presses in another home.

"We need to make sure that we're bringing opportunity to these communities so that people won't have to resort these types of unlawful and dangerous businesses to be able to make a living," said Councilmember Oswald Feliz.
