Seven families in Fordham have been displaced after a two-alarm fire destroyed their apartments Friday.

The flames broke out around 5:30 p.m. at 2205 Davidson Ave. Officials say it likely started in a light fixture and spread through the walls of a fourth-floor apartment.

The fire then spread to the floor above, where a family had to flee down the fire escape.

The Garcia family's fifth-floor apartment was directly above where the flames broke out, causing firefighters to break into the walls to control the fire.

"I felt horrible because I thought my animals are going to die. I feel horrible because everything is ruined and I have no idea how it happened," says Carmela Garcia.

Officials say two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion while responding, but are expected to be OK. No injuries among the tenants were reported, but apartments did suffer significant damage.

Those in apartments not directly affected by the fire were allowed to return to their homes.

Red Cross officials say they are helping seven families find shelter.
