Seven people are in the hospital, including a baby, after a fire broke out inside a two-story home in Castle Hill.
One resident, identified as Lesley, says she was in her second-floor apartment at 2144 Watson Ave. on Friday afternoon when she smelled the smoke.
"We opened the door and it was all black, you couldn't see anything, you couldn't get out. We ran to my bedroom window, opened it and stuck our heads out to try to get some pure air," she said.
Lesley's son, daughter and granddaughter were inside when firefighters arrived. They were able to get everyone out. Lesley's daughter and granddaughter were taken to the hospital and are expected to be OK.
The American Red Cross is helping at least two families who live in the building. The two children were taken to Montefiore in serious condition, and four adults were sent to Jacobi Medical Center for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
