9th annual Wildlife Conservation Society 5K held at Bronx Zoo
The Wildlife Sanctuary at the Bronx Zoo opened its doors for a special 5K run.

The 9th annual Run for the Wild was held to help raise awareness about the threats facing wildlife, while raising money for the Wildlife Conservation Society's work at the Bronx Zoo and around the world.

Organizers say there is no better way to get people talking about wildlife conservation than to get them out of the house for a run on a warm spring morning.

Since the run's inception in 2009, 40,000 people have participated in the event, with more than 5,000 this year.

"It's really important for awareness. Especially with all the endangered animals. So everyone needs to be aware of that and raise money of course," says runner Alexa Kouko.

Participants were able to choose from two different races. There was both a 5K and a run and walk, which is less competitive and targeted more towards families.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, based at the Bronx Zoo, harnesses the power of its global conservation program in nearly 60 nations.
