AAA estimates 20 million drivers will be on the road this Christmas.
According to AAA, drivers will find the most expensive year-end gas prices since 2014.
New York City's average gas price is $2.74 a gallon, which is 20 cents more than it was in 2016.
Most travelers were expected to head out between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., which could bring the heaviest
traffic.
They say a record number of New Yorkers will be traveling this year.
"The numbers just keep growing," says Robert Sinclair, of AAA. "Back in 2000, it was 74 million that were traveling, now it's 107 million and it's reflecting a general pattern."
The association recommends never warming up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
They say to make certain your tires are properly inflated and to keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-ups.
Also, AAA recommends not using your car's cruise control when driving on any slippery surface.
