Last minute holiday rush is underway with impacted commutes as New Yorkers prepare for a messy winter storm.

According to AAA, the best time to leave would be before 10 a.m. today, but rain and snow will likely impact that travel time. Making holiday travel a messy commute.

You may want to consider leaving after rush hour to avoid the expected holiday traffic on top of winter weather. Alternatively, you can leave on the actual holidays like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day. AAA says traffic is actually expected to be minimal on those days. Whenever you head out make sure you check your tires, fill up your tank, and make sure your car has its routine maintenance up to date to avoid hiccups on the road.

And for those travelling by air, over 8 million people are expected to travel by plane this year. This is the first time the number of domestic air travelers has surpassed 8 million. Top destinations this holiday season are all warm spots like Orlando, Miami, Cancun, and Punta Cana.
