An activist organization wants lower subway fares for low-income New Yorkers.
The Riders Alliance group asked straphangers at the 149th Street--Grand Concourse station what they had to sacrifice to pay for a MetroCard.
Many respondents said they had to choose between going hungry or paying for transportation. Others cut back on purchasing clothes and school supplies.
Riders Alliance says it will visit other neighborhoods around the city and send the collected answers to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
A single subway ride costs $2.75. A monthly pass costs $116. There are currently reduced rates only for people aged 65 or older or people with disabilities. Riders Alliance wants low-income residents added to the list.
The group says fares are too high for working class New Yorkers and single parents.
