Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday announced budget restorations allowing for new opportunities for new police officers and firefighters.

Adams says that there will be four new police academy classes, with the first academy taking place this April. Upwards of 600 people could be a part of the NYPD’s recruitment class for this spring and they would graduate in October and join the other three classes scheduled to also graduate this year. In addition to the police, Adams said a fifth firefighter will be returned to 20 FDNY engine companies allowing them to keep 190 firefighters on payroll who can't return to full duty status.

These new developments come after initial cuts were announced by Adams earlier this year because of the city's investment in housing migrants and asylum seekers over the years. Recent numbers show the city is expected to see less city-funded spending on the migrant crisis by the end of this year.

"Murders, shootings, robberies, burglaries, and overall crime were down in 2023,” said NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. “That progress does not simply happen without the men and women of the NYPD. As we look to improve public safety in 2024, we need every officer we can get. And that's why today is a great day for the NYPD and all New Yorkers."

Adams is expected to release the preliminary budget for 2025 next week with more detail measures in spending reduction across the boroughs.
