Gun violence advocates and community members joined together on Thursday to denounce the gun violence issues that are plaguing their neighborhoods.
The ralliers marched in Canarsie on Thursday afternoon, just a few feet away from where police say a 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were shot last Sunday.
“I hope as the residents see us walking through the community they get energized. They see they are not alone,” said Angel King, who attended the march. “We want our kids to be able to play. We want to be able to go inside the store and not have to worry about coming back.”
Several organizations in attendance of the march are calling on neighbors to take action, get involved in their community and hold each other accountable.
“It makes me sad for my community, cause it’s just another trauma that we go through,” said Nigel Dupree from B-Line Rise, one of the many groups in attendance of the march. “Another senseless act in our community and to the point where it seems like the community gets numb to the violence. And that’s not normal in any community.”
Ralliers say they’re looking forward to the day when they won’t have to join together for these types of demonstrations.
