Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s second State of the State address focused on several proposals to reopen, rebuild and strengthen the state, but it was his focus on equality that is getting some advocate’s attention. 

Many are calling for the passage of the Justice Roadmap 2021, a legislative platform to address the harms of the criminal, legal, and immigration systems on Black, brown, immigrant and low-income communities. 

Marvin Mayfield says growing up in Brooklyn in the 70s it was almost expected that someone who looked like him would be incarcerated.  

“I was 22 years old. I spent about eight years in prison,” Mayfield tells News 12. 

While Gov. Cuomo has proposed plans for employers to create more inclusive workforces and to enact a requirement for affordable internet for low-income families, Mayfield and others are calling for the governor to do so much more--including ending the war on drugs and criminalization of mental illness, ending perpetual punishment, and protecting the dignity and opportunity of incarcerated people.
