Attorney General Letitia James, Mayor Eric Adams and others announced Thursday that New York City will receive more than $88.9 million to fight the opioid crisis.

The money from their pharmaceutical settlement will go to treatment, prevention and education and to reverse overdoses.

James said 2020 was the deadliest year for overdoses that the country has ever experienced.

"Today marks a significant milestone in our collective fight to combat the opioid crisis," James said. "And this devastation and destruction has claimed so many lives and impacted so many families and we're here today to turn the tide on this crisis."

"Many people thought it was not possible. We thought we could not go after Big Pharma," Adams said.

James said the work is not done teaching young people about the dangers of fentanyl, misusing prescriptions and more.
