Members of Amvets Post 38 of the Bronx are hoping to finally receive a $100,000 grant for necessary structural repairs still needed after Superstorm Sandy.
The grant, secured by Sen. Jeff Klein, would pay for a new roof and reconstruction of the seawall under the building’s patio. However, the grant requires final approval by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, an agency that ensures the grant request is legitimate and necessary.
Members of the nonprofit tell News 12 that the building, which used to host parties and community events, has remained mostly barren due to all of the damage it endured.
Amvets members say their post saw major damage to the whole rear façade of the building, with flooding on the patio, destroyed walls and a gutted floor.
While veterans in the community have come together to try to repair the space, hosting community fundraisers, emptying the nonprofit’s funds and even borrowing $25,000 from another veterans’ organization to make emergency repairs, representatives of the organization tell News 12 they simply do not have enough money to complete the repairs.
Representatives say they hope the money can be allocated soon, because community events are the organization’s main source of income.
A representative tells News 12 that the Dormitory Authority last reached out to Post 38 on Sept. 21 asking for more documents.
News 12 is told the senator’s office is working to get the required paperwork delivered as quickly as possible.
