Runners came out to Soundview to honor a respected police officer who died after a 9/11-related illness.

Deputy Chief Steven Bonano died in 2015 from a rare form of blood cancer. His family says the 30-year veteran of the NYPD developed the disease after responding during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

A 5K now takes place every year to remember Bonano and to give back to children in the area.

Bonano grew up in Soundview and he was also a member of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. In honor of his time with the club, many runners say their mission is to make sure children in the area always have a place to go.

"He was a hero," said Officer Liam Cawley. "It just breaks my heart standing at the finish line next to his family and friends - the people who knew him and loved him. It's an honor to represent him here."

Tony Bonano, Steven's brother, presented two swimming scholarships to members of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club because he says Steven loved to swim.
