Many residents in Yorktown are upset after messages were spray painted on public property.
Yorktown police say offensive words and images were found under the Northbound Bridge where the Taconic Parkway passes over the Croton Reservoir.
They say there were racist and antisemitic slurs in the graffiti
The discovery is just over a week after the racially motivated shooting at a Buffalo supermarket and a recent report from the Anti-Defamation League that found antisemitic incidents at an all-time high in the U.S.
In a statement, Yorktown Town Supervisor Matt Slater says, in part, "We will not let this disgusting and ignorant language define us. Hate has no home here and we will continue to stamp it out whenever it raises its wicked head." At its meeting tomorrow night, Slater says the Town Board will ask the Department of Transportation if the town can turn the graffiti into a community mural of unity and acceptance.
