Residents in Bedford Park are having a dark and cold Christmas Eve as they continue to deal with the aftermath of last week’s water main break.

Many people still don’t have power or gas, leaving families without holiday lights, warm meals or elevators. The American Red Cross has stepped in to help, distributing warm meals, snacks and supplies to those in need.

“Only three out of five of the buildings have been restored with electricity. So we’re trying to get everyone as comfortable as possible,” says Dr. Akya Myrie, of the Red Cross.

Despite the challenges, some residents are trying to stay positive.

“God bless they’re here to feed us. We get food, we go up and down. That’s all we could do. Just tough it out,” says resident John Reyes.

The Red Cross says they will remain on-site providing support until at least Friday.
