Teachers in Bensonhurst say they are concerned as the COVID-19 infection rate continues to climb.
After school ended for the day at FDR High School, teachers marched across the street and demanded that the Department of Education take their concerns seriously.
After Presidents Donald Trump’s positive coronavirus diagnosis and the rate in the school's nearby ZIP codes going up—the fear has grown higher.
Just a couple weeks ago, staff says it was at 3 %. Teachers say it’s not safe to ask students and staff from across New York City to come to a building in an area that has become a health department concern.
They are demanding more testing for students and teachers, as well as allowing more teachers to work remotely.
“Anytime that you see a spike anywhere certainly at the highest levels of government, it’s a reminder that we all need to take this seriously, every time until we can get back to normal,” said teacher Greg Monte.
Teachers tell News 12 they want to be with their students helping in any way they can but not if it puts people's health in jeopardy.
They say they will continue pleading with the city—hoping for changes.
