A Bergen County native will be heading to Tokyo for her second Olympics on the United States rowing team.

Tracy Eisser says that she was overcome with relief when she made the team.

“Just knowing that in a week I’m getting on a plane and making my way to Tokyo is really exciting,” she says.

Eisser, of Fair Lawn, along with her partner Megan Kalmoe, won the women’s pair final at the U.S. Olympic team trials. It will be Eisser’s second Olympic appearance. She was part of the quadruple sculls team that finished fifth in Rio.

“We really don’t know what’s going to happen. But nobody does, so it’s kind of going to be this really interesting and exciting mystery to just see how it all shakes out and see how fast everyone is,” Eisser says.

Eisser was a track and field star in Fair Lawn before she walked onto the rowing team at Cornell in 2008. She says that getting to train at the national team facility in Princeton is a dream.

“New Jersey is just sort of a little bit gritty and that’s sort of an attitude that we embrace on the team,” she says. “I feel it’s really fitting that we train here in New Jersey and I really like it.”

The 31-year-old says that this will likely be her last Olympics. She is ready to give it all that she has.

“I am planning to retire after these Olympics, so I am just hoping to be able to go, have our best race, lay it all out there and walk away knowing we did the best that we could do on the day,” says Eisser.

No U.S. women's pair team has ever won gold at the Olympics. The Tokyo summer games begin July 23.
