Best of the Bronx: A Princeton-bound student
While most students are enjoying their summer break, a Princeton University-bound Bronx teen is working to make his community a better place.
When he isn't busy studying, Vidur Beharry says he spends most of his time volunteering. "That's something I like to do," he says. "I feel like a lot of teenagers and adults, in general, don't like to do that, even though it's necessary."
Beharry is one of five New York City students who were chosen to participate in Bank of America's national Student Leaders program. Beharry says the program includes working to determine how nonprofits tie into the business sector and with government.
This summer, he is interning with the Citizens Committee for New York City, which has teamed up with the bank to revitalize Brook Park in Mott Haven.
"This was an area that was blighted years ago," says Jeff Barker, president of Bank of America's New York City market. "Now it's a community garden, and it teaches children and adults about nutrition."
Beharry is one of 200 high school juniors and seniors around the country participating in the Student Leaders program.
He is also a Gates Millennium Scholar. Beharry will use money from the grant to attend Princeton in the fall.
