A Bronx artist is keeping the memory of loved ones alive through his art.
Jeffrey Ruiz says his first painting was of his grandfather. "It's the only image I have of him," says Ruiz. He says it was based on a small photo he owned - the only one he had.
'Instead of getting the photo blown up, I decided to use my talent to paint," says Ruiz.
Ruiz now uses his talent to paint for others by honoring the people in their lives who they have lost--but have not forgotten.
"I basically turn pain into art," said Ruiz.
Ruiz is a self-taught artist and works under the name Syck Art. The painter shares his work, which is a mix of realism and pop art, on his Instagram page.
His art brings joy to those who want to keep a loved one's memory alive.
"It brings them to life. I mend hearts," said Ruiz.
He has two sons and says he is passing some of his skills down to them. Ruiz says art is his passion and that he's starting to get more recognition for the pieces he has created.
