A Bronx-born aide to a city councilman is also a yo-yo champion.

Brian Melford is an aide to Councilman Andy King, but he's also the 2015 winner of the New Jersey State Yo-yo Championship.

Melford's yo-yoing career has run parallel to his job within the community, and he says he uses his experience with the classic toys to try to connect with Bronx kids.

"If I show them a yo-yo or give them a yo-yo, they're going to be more willing to open up to me and say you know what, 'I need a MetroCard for school or I'm being bullied,'” he says. 

Melford is even credited with creating his own trick called 'Melhops,' which can be seen being replicated by kids from across the world. 

"I just want more kids to introduce themselves to something they never pick up or something their parents might have done when they were kids but didn't end up passing it on," he says.
