A mentoring program aims to make an impact on the kids in our borough, one volunteer at a time.
The Bigs and Littles NYC Mentoring program serves kids ages 7-17 in all five boroughs with volunteers who act as mentors.
The pair typically meets twice a month and participates in fun activities across the city. Aside from fun, they also discuss goals with the child and work to accomplish them.
Skyler and 10-year-old Izzy were matched through the program and have a blossoming friendship for over a year and a half. Skyler Hauck, the mentor, says Izzy reminds him of how to be a kid again.
Ana Melo, senior program officer, says it helps take weight off the parent's shoulders.
"Oftentimes if it is a single parent household, you know, the parent is really working and focusing on making ends meet. They think their child can benefit from extra adult role models or just support." Melo said.
Bigs and Littles are looking for more volunteers in the Bronx.
