An MTA bus crash on University Avenue and the Washington Bridge on Tuesday is raising safety concerns among riders.
On Tuesday, a bus crashed into the concrete divider protecting a bike and pedestrian lane on the exit ramp from University Avenue to the Washington Bridge.
"I think it's too tight of a turn for everyone," said Jamere, a commuter.
Commuters said the protected bike lane made the exit ramp too narrow for bus and truck drivers to safely navigate.
Another crash at this location happened on Jan. 15, 2021, when an MTA bus drove off of the overpass next to the exit ramp.
A representative from the MTA said two incidents in five years doesn't mean the ramp is dangerous.
News 12's cameras captured multiple trucks and buses hitting into the divider, as well as a car collision on the ramp.
"It's hard for them to make a right," said a commuter named Carlos.
The MTA said in a statement, "There are five bus routes that make the turn at University Avenue, three turn left and two turn right."
It reassures New Yorkers that all routes are safe.
One cyclist, Luis, said the bike lane is a necessity for riders.
"Now we have the e-bikes... A lot of people are doing deliveries back and forth. We certainly needed that," Luis said.
Luis said a redesign of the bike lane could make the ramp wider for larger vehicles.
The Department of Transportation said in a statement, "Repairs have been made to the fence and barrier following the incident." News 12 crews saw DOT workers making the repairs to the fencing and plastic barriers.
