Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) announced two new efforts Monday to get more homeless Bronx and city residents off the streets.

City officials say the city has $10 million it saved because of lower shelter populations. As part of Bloomberg?s new measures, a portion of that money will be given to families that left shelters but are at high risk of returning. The money will also be used to offer services to families to help them keep their homes.

Under the new initiatives, the Department of Homeless Services will work to persuade homeless residents to enter supportive housing, enroll in treatment programs or stay at shelters. Bloomberg says his administration will create 12,000 units of supportive housing. According to Bloomberg, the city has made progress in its goal to reduce homelessness by two thirds by 2009.
