A delegation of city and state officials returned Wednesday from a trip to Puerto Rico to discuss economic development with officials there.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. was among those who joined Gov. Andrew Cuomo to visit the debt-stricken island, which is facing an economic downturn and a $73 billion deficit.
"The leadership of New York is with them," Diaz said of the island's population. "We let them know that they are not alone."
The delegation met with Puerto Rican Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla and other officials at a roundtable discussion to brainstorm ways to help boost the island's economy.
Among the solutions, New York pledged to offer assistance by streamlining tourism from the state to Puerto Rico and by collaborating with State University of New York student exchange programs.
