The borough president says he wants to increase waterfront accessibility in the Bronx, especially above the Harlem River.

When the High Bridge -- an aqueduct from the 1800s -- reopened to pedestrians two years ago, some touted it as the eighth wonder of the world.

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. says it's time to make the bridge -- and the entire Bronx waterfront -- more easily accessible.

"This is part of my dream to connect the entire west side of the Bronx from Van Cortlandt Park all the way down to Randalls Island," Diaz says. "You can have one continuous access to the waterfront, so people can go for walks. People can go for bike rides."

As part of that plan, he says the city will extend Bridge Park south from the Alexander Hamilton Bridge and the High Bridge's hidden stairway.

"Unless you're familiar with the immediate neighborhood, you really don't know where the entrance of the High Bridge is," Diaz explains.

So a new, more visible staircase will make access more open and inviting, he says.
