A Bridgeport woman convicted of conspiring and helping to carry out her estranged husband's slaying was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years in prison.
Larise King was found guilty by a three-judge panel in May of hiring two men, a family member and his friend, to kill Dathan "Dae Dae" Gray then driving the getaway car. She was the first defendant to stand trial in the state since the pandemic began.
"That’s my son. He was born on my birthday. My only child," said Dathan Gray Sr., his father.
His family says Gray and King had a toxic and sometimes violent relationship but that he'd moved on.
"All she had to do was walk away," says Gray Sr.
Gray was shot more than a dozen times on Newfield Avenue in Bridgeport on July 27, 2019.
"I just wanted to hear her say I’m sorry," said Gray Sr.
There was no apology as King briefly tried to address the court but broke down crying. Her mother spoke on her behalf, saying she believes King didn't do it.
"Things can look one way but that don’t mean it happened that way," said King's mother.
The judges called it a domestic violence murder carried out brutally.
"No one wins at the end of the day. I still have to go visit the cemetery to see my son, and his children are still fatherless." said Tammy Pendergrass-Green, the victim's mother. "So, we don’t win. We just learn how to adjust."
The men who fatally shot Gray have never been arrested. Gray's family says King is still protecting them.
