Here’s what you need to know:
  • A HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK is in effect through this evening. Distant Hurricane Gabrielle is bringing large waves and life-threatening rip currents to Brooklyn and Queens beaches today.
  • It's a cool, clear and calm start to the day. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 50s.
  • Today will be a bit warmer with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures in the mid 70.
  • The Autumnal Equinox officially begins today at 2:19PM. On the Autumnal equinox, the sun crosses over the equator marking the start of astronomical Fall. This results in nearly equal day and night in the northern hemisphere.
  • A frontal system will bring a few showers and potential thundershowers Tuesday evening into Wednesday. Severe weather or flooding is not expected. This front will stall to our South and bring a surge of warm air with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s. The timing is likely after 7 p.m. Stay tuned for updates!
  • A secondary storm system moves in late this week into parts of the weekend bringing more rain chances and cooler temperatures in the low 70s. We're not expecting washout conditions all week. TRACKING THE TROPICS: Hurricane Gabrielle formed yesterday afternoon Southeast of Bermuda. It currently poses no direct threat to land but will continue to intensify over the next few days. As it moves Northeast, it is likely to become a major hurricane, making it the second major hurricane of the season. There are two other areas of interest in the Atlantic that have a low to medium chance of developing in the next 7 days. These tropical waves currently pose no direct threat to land.
