Another round of light rain and possibly a moderate burst is expected between Friday 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday. Once that rain clears, it unlocks June-like warmth which will enter the borough. The clouds will be clearing just in time for the partial solar eclipse just before 7 a.m. Eclipse glasses and a clear view near the east horizon are needed to view the event. It will be much warmer than a typical March morning, with temperatures in the mid-50s, a high launching pad for temperatures to soar into the afternoon.
All the ingredients for summerlike warmth are in place, including a warm west wind and plenty of sun. Highs should reach the low-80s away from the water, with 70s at the immediate coast. Gusts could exceed 30 mph at times, leading to a slightly elevated brush fire risk. This will be the warmest day in nearly 150 days, as the last time it reached 80 degrees was Nov. 6, 2024. If it reaches 82 degrees at Central Park, it would be the warmest day since mid-September.
Saturday's warmth will be a one-hit wonder. The same front that will bring rain overnight will move back across the area Saturday evening. Temperatures will nosedive rapidly between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., from 82 to 50 degrees in just six hours. A shower or two is expected with the cooldown Saturday night. It will be wildly colder on Sunday with highs struggling to stay in the 50s. The same front moves back north Sunday night, unlocking more warm weather for Monday with temperatures returning to the 70s.
This secondary warmup will bring a powerful storm to the area by Monday evening, with the threat for severe storms. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has already issued a "slight" risk, tier two out of five, for seeing severe storms across the borough Monday. Such a high severe threat in the month of March has not happened across the borough in years. strong temperatures could drop from the 70s to the 30s in about 36 hours early next week. It will be in the 40s at best on Wednesday before another warmup by the end of next week.
