Metro Plus Health and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson hosted an event for fibroid awareness on Monday.
The National Institute of Health says that 80% of Black women and 70% of white women have fibroids by the age of 50. Fibroids are painful tumors, usually non-cancerous, that can lead to infertility or miscarriages for people with uteruses.
Dr. Sophia Palmer, an OB-GYN, says that even the healthiest person can get fibroids but there are ways to decrease risks, such as replacing older nonstick pans used for cooking.
“Once you start to see the coating start to go when you start cooking, that's going to get into your body as well,” she says.
