The Bronx Community College welcomed its newest tree – and they’re over the moon about it.

The seeds of the new American sycamore that was planted at the college on Tuesday took a flight around the moon on NASA’s Artemis 1 in 2022.

The community college is one of 50 institutions in the United States that got the chance to plant these “moon trees.” The five different species of seeds traveled 270,000 miles from Earth and back and have been growing under the care of the federal Department of Agriculture.

The last time that moon trees were planted? Back in 1971, when a collection of seeds that were on the Apollo 14 mission were grown after returning home.
