The Bronx Community Foundation is a local organization that's working to provide digital literacy to residents.
It partnered with the nonprofit group "LIFT."
Together, the organizations provide digital literacy courses and laptops to residents who are lacking these resources.
"LIFT is amazing. LIFT helped me in a time of need where I needed some extra help," said Malika Butler, a resident who regularly goes to LIFT for support.
She said she got a free laptop for her son, and she's surprising him with it before he goes to trade school.
She said she got the laptop after completing a digital parenting course, and that she's grateful for organizations who help people access technology.
"We provided laptops to provide support to families that don't have access to laptops. You know, one in three Bronx households don't have access to computers. Over 20% of households in the Bronx don't have access to broadband internet," said Derrick Lewis, the board chair at the Bronx Community Foundation.
Lewis said he witnessed the lack of access to technology, along with other issues, while growing up in the Bronx. Through the Bronx Community Foundation, Lewis said he can partner with nonprofits, community members, and elected officials to help residents solve whatever problem they may be facing.
"We focus on food insecurity, housing instability, digital equity, economic security, small business support, and other areas. We also have supported emergency relief, whether it's supporting the fires that have been happening in the Bronx or other, emergency things that may occur in the borough," said Lewis.
