The NYPD and New Yorkers continue to mourn the loss of fallen NYPD officer Alexis Martinez.
Martinez and his father were found with gunshot wounds to their heads on Wednesday afternoon as a possible murder-suicide. Police believe the father dealt with mental health issues and pulled the trigger.
A vigil was held in Soundview outside of the apartment on Fteley Avenue where they were found dead. Nearly 1,000 officers filed the street to honor the life and legacy of Martinez.
The late officer was given a dignified transfer on Wednesday, surrounded by his fellow officers – members of the Bronx narcotics unit that Martinez was a part of.
Martinez’s fellow officers say that he was personable, always had a smile on his face, and was well-known and respected in the community. He was working his way toward becoming a detective on the force.
He graduated from St. Raymonds High School in the Bronx and John Jay College where he played baseball.
Police are still working to determine exactly what took place inside the apartment where he was found dead.
