A Bronx councilmember will introduce legislation this week that would require speed signs be placed in school zones.

Councilmember Mark Gjonaj, a Democrat from the Bronx, will introduce legislation this week that would require the radar driven signs be placed in school zones by Oct. 31.

The legislation is intended for the signs to be placed outside of school buildings that house more than 250 students.

Gjonaj's office says because the radar signs are cheaper than speed cameras, the devices can be rolled out to 1,200 buildings.

The signs work by reading a drivers speed then flashing a digital value of that speed back in real-time.

Of the 140 speed cameras in New York City school zones, only 20 remain active after the state senate failed to pass legislation extending their use in the city.
