A Bronx couple has been indicted after law enforcement says they discovered two malnourished young girls inside of a disgusting apartment at the Mitchell Houses in Mott Haven.
Two young sisters, 3 and 4 years old, were found by police locked inside of an apartment unit at 300 East 138th St. in May. Authorities say the girls were nearly starved, naked and surrounded by feces and in urine-soaked diapers when found.
Police originally came to investigate the apartment after complaints of squatters. They found 40-year-old Stephanie Grabowski and 45-year-old Mark Russell squatting in that apartment before kicking down a locked bedroom door to discover the two bruised girls laying on a dirty mattress inside the apartment.
Authorities believe that the young children may have resorted to eating the mattress because they weren’t given any food or water.
Based on the police investigation, both Grabowski and Russell were indicted on second-degree kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, burglary, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The indictment says that Grabowski’s mother has other charged stemming from a family court warrant.
The couple is due back in court on Sept. 13.
