The Bronx District Attorney’s Office says no charges will be brought against the officers involved in the arrest of 16-year-old Jahmel Leach during a protest last summer.
Family and representatives for Leach met with Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark Tuesday morning. Clark gave them a report on the investigation into police use of force during the June protest and said no criminality was found.
The DA’s office also released a surveillance video of the incident near East Fordham Road and Morris Avenue on June 1, 2020.
They say Leach can be shown in a group kicking in a storefront and then attempting to light debris on fire.
They say an officer then used a Taser on Leach, causing him to fall to the ground, injuring the right side of his face. They say two other officers struck him with a baton.
Leach was eventually taken to the hospital.
In the report, the DA said that the use of force to arrest Leach was not found to be excessive or unjustified. It also states that while peaceful protests are supported, violence in the community will not be tolerated.
Leach’s mother said she wants the officers to be held accountable.
"I feel like these officers need to be charged, I feel like I need to go above their head... If I hit my son, I go to jail, I get an ACS case. If I hit an officer, I'm being arrested, but yet it's OK for an officer to put their hand on my child and nothing is being done to them which is very injustice,” said Daisy Acevedo, Leach’s mother.
Leach’s attorney said they are calling on the NYPD to conduct an investigation to prosecute and fire the officers involved.
