Employers from around the Bronx celebrated their summer interns Monday night at the Bronx Zoo.
The internships were possible thanks to a task force that gave more than 200 Bronx high school students the ability to learn career skills from local businesses.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. created the task force, along with the nonprofit group HERE to HERE.
Organizers say the partnership between the nonprofit organization and the Bronx Borough President’s Office came after recognizing the need to help high school students plan for their future
"It's about giving our children, our youth, the opportunity and the skill set, working on the skill set, so they can become the future work force, not only the in the Bronx, but in the city of New York and beyond," Diaz said.
Some of the companies that provided the internships were Montefiore and the Bronx Zoo itself.
Organizers say they hope to promote the internships over the school year and expect to have the program again next summer.
