NYCEM & DSNY launch campaign to help New Yorkers become aware of their flood risks

New York City Emergency Management and New York City Department of Sanitation are launching a campaign called 'Know Your Zone'. The goal is to make New Yorkers aware of the flood risks where they live and work and to make evacuation plans.
It comes amid hurricane season and National Preparedness Month, with flooding as recent as last week. The campaign will be featured on 1,800 DSNY trucks across the city.
“Anything that New Yorkers can do to prepare in advance means that they're ready to go if disaster strikes," said NYC Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson.
The website has a tool that breaks the city down into zones 1-6, with 1 being the areas most likely to be evacuated.
From there, it lists nearby evacuation sites.
NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell says preparedness is vital.
“Forty-three New Yorkers lost their life in Hurricane Sandy. And so, you know, that's definitely something to be prepared for. But, like, you mentioned, we also see flash flooding. We see other events. And, you know, things can turn deadly," said Farrell.
