Some education advocates say the Bronx High School of Science, as well as two specialized Brooklyn schools, are shutting out minority students.

According to a New York Times report, since the city created a specialized institution program 10 years ago, the number of black and Hispanic students in the schools has declined. The report also shows Asian student enrollment keeps increasing. According to the report, in 1995, black students made up 11.8 percent of the Bronx Science student body and now, that number is 4.8 percent.

Some education officials say they do not know the reason for this trend. Some education advocates believe the schools should not rely solely on a tough admission exam to decide who can attend.
