The borough's veterans were saluted Sunday as the Bronx hosted its 33rd annual Veterans Day Parade.

The parade started at East Tremont Avenue and Lafayette Avenue and ended at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park.

Organizers of the Throgs Neck event asked residents to line the streets waving American flags to show appreciation for the sacrifices of the veterans.

Several schools sponsored this year's parade, which came a day after the Veterans Day holiday.

"It's really the homecoming for all veterans who never got that homecoming," says Jim Kenny, who served in Afghanistan in 2006. "You know, came back from being overseas and never got that big 'welcome back.' This is our chance and it's nice to see the people turn out and give us that."

Aside from the physical trauma from which veterans may suffer, mental health is often affected as well. WoundedWarriorHome.org reports that more than 540,000 veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
