A new initiative is coming to the Bronx aimed at bringing awareness to the epidemic of hepatitis C.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and North Central Bronx Hospital have teamed up to encourage people to get tested during May for Hepatitis Awareness Month.
Dr. Yvette Calderon, medical director of North Central Bronx Hospital, says many people who have hepatitis C don't know they have it, which is why it is important for everyone to get tested.
Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver and can lead to liver cancer and other health complications.
Doctors say early detection is key in hepatitis treatment.
