Sunday at sundown marks the beginning of the Jewish new year celebration of Rosh Hashana, and the Bronx Jewish Center in Morris Park shared a look at its holiday traditions with News 12.
Family and friends from the community will gather at the start of the two-day celebration together to reconnect and reflect. The Bronx Jewish Center begins Rosh Hashana with a service and a four-course dinner in its backyard for the community. The tradition of blessing and eating apples and honey leads off the meal.
Pomegranate is also on the menu as Rabbi Saadia Pewzner says its many seeds are to represent all the good deeds that should be done in the new year.
There's also the blowing of the ram's horn, known as the shofar, to welcome the new year, wake up the community and remind them of the good. Members say that it is the community's mission to spread kindness and goodness, no matter what the climate.
