Bronx man indicted for brutal attack against EMTs responding to his home

A man accused of attacking two FDNY EMTs at his home has been indicted on assault charges, according to The Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
The incident began around 10 p.m. on April 9, when the EMTs responded to 1889 Sedgwick Ave. and attempted to render medical aid to Jose Bencosme.
Prosecutors say the 22-year-old punched one of the EMTs in the face. The EMT struck his head against a wall during the attack.
As the other EMT tried to help his partner, Bencosme allegedly punched him in the face and head repeatedly.
The victims were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment. The EMT whose head hit the wall sustained a laceration that required approximately five staples.
Prosecutors say the other EMT suffered bruising and swelling to his face and head.
News 12 previously met with Bencosme’s girlfriend, who discussed the events leading to the violent incident.
She said she called 911 out of fear he was a danger to himself, and the situation quickly got out of hand.
"He was under the influence. He had no control, no right mental state of mind. He didn't even recognize his parents," she said. "He's not a monster. He's not a violent person. This was not out of his heart.”
Bencosme is scheduled to return to court in August.
