The man that police fatally shot on the steps of the
Cathedral Church of Saint John the Devine on Sunday has been identified as a
Bronx man with a criminal history.
Police say Luis Manuel Vasquez Gomez, who lived on East 176
Street, began firing two semiautomatic handguns at the end of a Christmas
choral concert just before 4 p.m.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said he had a bag with a can
of gasoline, rope, wire, knives and a Bible with him.
The New York Times reports that Gomez shouted, “Kill me” at
officers who were stationed at the event. He was eventually shot dead on the
steps of the church.
Gomez had prior arrests for attempted murder in 1990 and criminal possession of a controlled substance in 1989.
