The Mind Builders Creative Arts Center is celebrating its 40th anniversary educating students about music, arts and culture.
Representatives tell News 12 that they provide a place for young people to express themselves creatively. The Bronx organization offers a variety of classes, including dance. There is also a teen theater program and a folk culture program.
"There's a real need here for arts education, and for children young people to do different things," said Waldo Chavez, director of the music department.
The organization serves around 700 students a year. Officials say that the price for classes are on a sliding scale.
"Our motto is, nobody is turned down if they cannot afford to pay," Chavez said.
TJ Pollard, a seventh-grader, says that everything he learned about the trumpet is from over two years of classes at Mind Builders.
"It's like a family away from my actual family and it actually gives me like a peace of mind," he said.
In celebration of their anniversary, students will be performing at Lincoln Center.
Representative say that enrollment for summer classes is now open.
