Those enjoying National Doughnut Day this morning may be surprised to know that it started because of World War I.

The Salvation Army says it chose doughnuts to help raise money during the Great Depression because of their role in boosting troop morale during the war. With rations of flour, lard and sugar, young volunteers served doughnuts to tired soldiers.

The Salvation Army says the reason behind the original National Doughnut Day is to remember those in need.
