The Bronx River Alliance helped to rally volunteers for International Coastal Cleanup Day Saturday to clean up the land along the Bronx River.
Organizers say one of the most important aspects of the effort is finding out what kind of trash is actually in the area.
Volunteers came equipped with trash cleaning tools to classify and keep a count of the garbage they picked up.
Experts say one of the biggest waste products along the river was Styrofoam.
Since rivers are hotspots for trash, volunteers also took canoes up and the down the Bronx River to look for litter.
